Target Audience research

From this chart of information gathered by the UK Film council, our target audience of people aged 25-44 are above the medium range of films watched quarterly. Their percentage of watching 11-25 is 45% and 43% respectively. They are also prominent to watching over 50 films quarterly, with these percentages they are more likely to watch a film that appeals to them.

The thriller/suspense genre is highly rated with its 53% of audiences enjoying films of this audience. This would allow our film to appeal to a wide public audience, a majority, giving it a wide range of potential audiences. However the war genre only has a public enjoyment rating of 29%, this would limit the films potential audience as only about a third of the audience would show any interest in he film before developing any further knowledge about the film itself.

Thriller/suspense show a large favourable rating by the public audience at 26% of people rating it as their favourite dil genre. War films however yet again show a less favourable rating of only 7% of the public rating it as their favourite genre.

From this graph our film will benefit from being targeted towards the Eastern European or Black African/Caribbean audience as both of these groups show favourable preferences to the war genre over the average GB audience. Both of those groups also show higher ratings of favourability of thriller/suspense over the average GB audience. The graph also shows that the war films genre is most disliked by the older female audience with a 9% lower favourable rating than the average GB populous rating.

Churchill Productions - Timed analysis

0:00 - 0:03 Moving mid shot displaying sergeant Gunnery (introducing the audience to the films genre)
0:08 - 2:12 The soundtrack for the film trailer is a cheery up beet song that references Jesus and God (this difference between the innocence of the song and the war trailer might of been used to just show the contrasting nature of American cheery attitudes to normal life and their severity and seriousness when it comes to war)
0:09 - 0:16 Long shot of soldiers on their beds chanting (implementing the soldier mentality of discipline)
0:17 - 0:20 Wide panning shot of helicopter (starting setting of the Vietnam war)
0:28 - 0:42 Close up shot followed up with wide moving shot of shooting at people (further showing the violent and cruel nature of war)
0:45 - 0:54 Wide shot of explosions, soldiers running with their weapons (showing the havoc of war)
0:56 - 0:59 Mid shot of soldier getting shot in the arm (blood splatters out of his arm violently)
1:07 - 1:10 Mid shot of disturbed soldiers walking (the facial expressions of the soldiers show how the war has effected their mental states)
1:11 - 1:33 Conversation between soldier and sergeant about his badge and helmet (the soldier had a peace badge and "born to kill" on his helmet, the 70's mentality of peace and war side by side)
1:18 - 1:25 Wide shot of explosions and soldiers falling to the ground (showing the uncertainty and surprise tactics of combat in Vietnam)
1:28 - 1:29 Wide moving shot of soldier walking through burning scenery (quick scene, dark lighting)
1:32 - 1:35 Mid shot of Vietnamese man stealing the camera of American soldier (the constant anger shown by citizens of Vietnam towards Americans)
1:36 - 1:44 Wide angle of two soldiers walking and talking about the Vietnamese people (they're supporting the previous scene where a Vietnamese person stole from an American. They live in constant disarray)
1:45 - 1:52 Close up of soldiers face showing his emotional distress and more soldiers walking past burning fields (as the soldiers spend more time in the war zone their emotions turn darker as they face the realism of gruesome combat)
1:56 - 2:02 Mid shot of soldier being interviewed, his lines tell the audience his purpose and the fact that he's prepared for combat when needed (the soldiers main job was to "take combat photos" but he then says that "ill go the the rifle" "if the shit gets too thick" referencing the violent nature of the Vietnam war specifically)
2:02 - 2:07 Another soldier is presented to being interview by a camera crew and is shown to be of less intelligence than the previous soldier (his comment on the question "what do you think about Americas involvement in the war?" was "oh I think we should win". This both shows the naiveness of soldiers deployed to the war and their lack of understanding about the severity of the war)
2:08 - 2:16 Cuts to a black screen with the name of the film and of the director
2:16 - 2:18 Black screen

Target Audience

Target Audience: A particular group of people that a product or film is specifically aimed at

The Target Audience of Shaun of The Dead would be young adults. Its satirical humour focused on taking classic horror zombie films and pointing out their flaws would appeal to them as they would of grown up watching similar films that they would've seen as repetitive and 'cheesy'.

Detailed Primary research

The Transformers Age of Extinction was successful in my opinion because it was able to market to a wide audience and made a lot of money for the producers. Due to Transformers recognition as one of the most known toy and cartoon series, the film was able to cater to an audience that either watched or played with transformers from a young age and developed a relationship with the series. The film also made $1.1 billion in the box office, its budget was $210 million.

The films director was Michael Bay, infamously known for over editing movies with action scenes.
A film distributor is responsible for the marketing of a film. The distribution company is usually different from the production company. Distribution deals are an important part of financing a film.

If a production company has major funding either through earnings, studio investors, or private investors, and has done or been involved with big budget productions in the past, it is considered to be a major production company. These companies often work with well-known and expensive talent.

The film was very quickly bombarded with negative reviews and ratings as soon as it released. Rotten Tomatoes gave it 18%, even though 52% of people enjoyed the film and rated it negatively. Metacritic also gave it 32%. Some reviews included "Well, this is another overlong and over-the-top action extravaganza from Bay about the cars that turn into robots."

Synopsis: Autobots must escape sight from a bounty hunter who has taken control of the human serendipity: Unexpectedly, Optimus Prime and his remaining gang turn to a mechanic, his daughter, and her back street racing boyfriend for help. IMBD

Some of the actors in the film include Mark Wahlberg. He acts as the main character who finds Optimus Prime and helps him find the other autobots. He was most likely chosen for this role due to his massive popularity. The other actors include Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor, who are both quite new to the big screen acting. None of these actors show much enthusiasm in acting alongside CGI robots. Michael Bay's has become infamous for taking known films and making them in a way that their only purpose is to make an interesting trailer and to sell it.

 Budget: $210,000,000 (estimated)
–Opening Weekend: $100,038,390 (USA)
–Gross: $245,428,137 (USA) (3 October 2014)
Release Date(s) 27th June 2014 (US)

In the films opening weekend it wasn't able to break even on its budget. Compared to another famous film franchise like Star Wars The Force Awakens which made $529 million in its first weekend, and Star Wars: Rogue One which made $155.5 million in its weekend.

Production company: Paramount Pictures

Distributors: Paramount Pictures   Paramount Home Entertainment

Some of the reviews Transformers Age of Extinction received from Rotten Tomatoes, a popular public film reviewing website, include:
"The few authentic inspirations to be found in the movie's hundred and sixty-five roiling minutes involve gigantic science-fiction contrivances." Richard Brody from the New Yorker
"Well, this is another overlong and over-the-top action extravaganza from Bay about the cars that turn into robots." Peter Bradshaw from the Guardian

To anyone who hasn't seen this film it can be easily explained as a box full of explosions with some product placements from China stuffed with massive boring robots that Michael Bay packed with dynamite and stuffed down the consumers throats, its a film that isn't recommended to anyone over the mental age of 8 and should be avoided by anyone who has taste in acting and actual stories.
